Traditional Chinese Medicine: Ancient Methodology that is Relevant Today

by Gretchen Belenchia

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Ancient Methodology that is Relevant Today, Cloud Gate Acupuncture and Healing Arts in Broomfield, ColoradoTraditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of medicine that began thousands of years ago with the study and observation of nature.

Ancient practitioners noticed the duality of this world – light and dark, hot and cold, excess and deficiency, yin and yang – and used these eight principles to form the foundation for diagnosis in the human body.

These practitioners also noticed the cycles of the days and of the years. They recognized the five elements or phases of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood.

They were then able to use these observations from nature and apply them to the treatment of people because human beings on this planet embody these cycles, elements, and duality.

Ancient peoples realized that humans are a part of (not apart from) nature, that nature has a direct effect on us, and that we can also influence nature.

TCM practitioners use these principles of nature to help restore balance in the body: if there is too much cold, add heat; if too dry, add moisture; if there is a deficiency, tonify and support the body.

These basic principles of diagnosis and treatment have not changed for thousands of years because the laws of nature have not changed for thousands of years.

How is this relevant today? Because after all this time (and whether we’re aware of it or not), we are still connected to nature and to the health of our world.

If the world gets sicker, we get sicker. And with our current medical paradigm, as we get sicker, the world also gets sicker. This is not some new age “help our Mother Earth” statement.

It really quite simple: as the world gets more and more polluted due to our lifestyle, we get exposed to these same pollutants: from oil and gas emissions, nuclear waste, the various radio and wireless waves we’re now constantly exposed to, electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) from our televisions, computers, cell phones, etc., pesticides, insecticides…all the ‘cides,’ and unclean water.

Cloud Gate offers Acupuncture in Broomfield, ColoradoThe Earth is a living organism. We see this in the way it is able to bring forth life from its surface. We can visibly see where it is sick and struggling or vibrant and healthy. And if we linger in different areas, we can feel it too.

That’s why spending time in nature feels so good. Living, vibrant areas are healthy, and when we spend time in these areas, they can make us healthier and happier. The reverse is also true. Remaining in areas of high pollution has the strong potential to make us sick.

By poisoning our world, we’re directly poisoning ourselves. And as we get sicker, more synthetic drugs are produced and more drugs are consumed.

This drug production can lead to increased toxic waste production, improper disposal of leftover or expired drugs, and abuse of drugs – from over-prescribing to addiction.

All of this drug usage may help us in the short-term and can be life saving and necessary to our survival. But the long-term effects are increased pollution, drug-resistance, and a reliance on these drugs for symptomatic relief while we continue to remain unwell.

Cloud Gate Acupuncture and Healing Arts in Broomfield, ColoradoSo how does all of this information pertain to TCM? Because TCM can help us re-establish our connection to nature and to ourselves.

By using the ancient methods of diagnosis and treatment based on the principles of how nature behaves, TCM practitioners are able to bring the body back into balance.

Humans are dynamic, complex organisms. The body can easily become imbalanced due to lifestyle and environmental impact, but the more that you are in harmony with yourself and the world around you, the more balanced and less unwell you will be.

That’s how TCM can benefit you. It allows you to remember what being in harmony with yourself and the world feels like.

TCM is more relevant today than ever. As stated in our mission, we believe in the interconnectedness of all life and that a healthier you equals a healthier world.

TCM can help you to reconnect to yourself, your life, and the world around you. Begin or continue your personal healing process for yourself and the world.
